Malcolm Cunning has been deposed as the leader of the Labour group on Glasgow City Council after the party lost another local election to the SNP.
George Redmond beat Cunning by 24 votes to 11 - a landslide victory.
Soryia Siddique also defeated Cunning's number two Eva Murray to become deputy leader.
Redmond said: "It's a privilege to be elected leader and I will not let the people of Glasgow down. The people told us to clean up the city and we need to address the cost of living crisis."
Labour gained seats in Glasgow in May and came one seat behind the SNP - but the result was not enough to avert a leadership contest.
Cunning’s preference had been to hold on to the post for a few years before handing over to a so-called next generation leader.
Redmond, elected as a councillor again after a five year break from the city chambers, pounced and challenged Cunning for his job.
After a short but intense battle, he pipped the sitting leader after securing support from across the councillor group.
Redmond, a close ally of fellow Labour councillor Frank McAveety, told the Record last week his first priority would be calling a summit of business leaders:
“Glasgow is not in a good place. People want the city cleaned up. One of the first things I would do is call a meeting of the business community about the city centre.
“The state of the city centre is heartbreaking. Big stores have pulled out. We can’t pretend it is not happening.”
Siddique said: "Glasgow Labour has made history, I am delighted to be the first female from a diverse background to be elected as deputy leader of Glasgow Labour Group. The communities I represent and I experience inequality every day. Glasgow gave me so much and I believe everyone should have similar life chances.
"Delighted to be part of a team of strong women, bringing their unique lived experience, knowledge and skill set to improve life chances. I know what the challenges are from serving in Southside Central in the heart of the first ministers constituency.
"My constituents have placed their trust in me again. I will put their concerns at the centre of all I do. I look forward to serving with all my colleagues to deliver for our fellow Glaswegians."
