Glasgow Gorbals housing association homes to boast five bedrooms

A new social housing estate is to be built in the Gorbals offering four and five bedrooms townhouses as well as one and two bedroom flats.

The development on the site of the demolished Gorbals health centre at Pine Place would be a mixture of 18 flats and 10 houses if plans get approved.

The houses would accommodate eight, seven or six people and have private gardens, according to plans, while the five-storey flats would be suitable for two or four residents.

New Gorbals Housing Association, which owns the site, has applied for planning permission to construct the 28 homes.

A design statement said: “The Pine Place development will provide new homes for social rent near the centre of Glasgow, building on the recent and continuing regeneration of the wider Gorbals area.”

It added: “The new development should be measured in the widest social, economic and environmental terms, in particular for the quality of life it offers residents, with access to safe places to play, walk through, and pause for chats with neighbours.”

A total of 24 parking spaces and landscaping are proposed at the site, which sits on the the corner of Old Rutherglen Road and Pine Place.

Explaining more about the potential architecture of the flats, the statement said: “The elevational treatment of the five-storey apartment block is ordered and rational taking its cue from the heritage of the Gorbals and context; tough and robust but timeless.”

The "generous" windows would offer good daylight and maximise views and the apartments would have balconies according to the statement.

Describing the the two and three storey townhouses, the statement said: “These well-defined street-based buildings with paired front doors enliven the public realm and promote a sense of safety within the area.”

Glasgow City Council is considering the planning application.

The type of homes on offer reflects housing need according to planning documents.
