Glasgow former military man ran 101 miles to raise funds for Doddie Aid

A former military man ran non-stop for 24 hours to raise money for the Doddie Aid over the weekend.

Gary Ferguson ran an impressive 101 miles from Fort William to Glasgow on the West Highland Way. The rugby enthusiast ran a little further to the home of the Glasgow Warriors, Scoutston Stadium too.

The ex-Royal Navy mine clearance diver described the experience as 'brutal' as he faced running in the dark, windy, cold and wet weather.

But he has managed to raise over a thousand pounds for Doddie Aid - a charity that's working towards finding a cure to Motor Neurone Disease.

Gary said: "I can honestly say that I didn’t really enjoy it that much whatsoever. It was tasking mentally and physically.

"I think the only thing that got me through it was my grit, determination, stubbornness and the fact that I was doing it for a great cause and seeing there was donations coming in so I think that is what powered me through.

"Despite almost hating every minute of it and not wanting to run for a very long time of course I am super glad that I have done it.

"Helping raise awareness for a great cause like Doddie Aid, I would never regret doing something like that. I finished, I did it, I’m proud of it and it was a great thing.

"But it was absolutely horrible for the vast majority of the time, especially the late night bits."

Gary is the creator behind Combat Journal - a guided journal to help people improve their mental health.

During the run, he met a man called Paul who he fondly remembers.

He added: "The guy I met along the way who had heard about Combat Journal so that was a real boost. I left talking to him with a great big smile on my face and a bounce in my step.

"It was just a nice warm and fuzzy feeling and he definitely made me feel good so thank you to Paul who I met on the West Highland Way – he also donated to my fundraiser page so thank you doubly Paul."

Gary hasn't got anymore 'crazy' challenges planned for now and is going to enjoy getting some rest and relaxation.

Anyone wishing to donate to his JustGiving page can do so until the middle of February.
