Glasgow doctor blasts 'out of order' anti-abortion 'bullies' outside hospital

A Glasgow doctor has slammed the hundreds of anti-abortion protesters outside hospitals that "bully women" seeking abortion healthcare.

Dr Greg Irwin, a consultant at Glasgow Children's Hospital, made a plea to new First Minister Humza Yousaf to implement a bill that would create buffer zones outside abortion clinics across Scotland.

He posted his message on Twitter as hundreds of anti-abortion protestors gathered outside the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Sunday evening for the final hour of their 40-day protest.

Images showed campaigners from 40 Days For Life - which is linked to a US Christian organisation of the same name - lined up across the road from the hospital's maternity unit, with many holding signs and what appeared to be small lanterns.

Pro-choice campaigners arrived earlier on Sunday morning in response to the protestors to put up almost 200 posters with messages such as "my rights, my body, my choice" and "bans don't stop abortions - they stop safe abortions".

Dr Irwin's message urged Humza Yousaf to push through the buffer zone bill, describing the actions of the anti-abortion protestors as "completely out of order".

In a video message posted on Twitter, he said: "Hi folks, my name's Greg Irwin, I'm a doctor at the Children's Hospital here in Glasgow. Just recording a quick message for Humza Yousaf.

"First of all, congratulations on your new job, I hope very much that you're going to push through Gillian Mackay's buffer zones bill as soon as possible because as you can see we've got well over 100 demonstrators. Protestors outside my hospital right now.

"These people are here to bully women coming into the hospital and seeking abortion healthcare. That's completely out of order.

"So, Mr Yousaf, I know you've got a lot on your plate, but the bill's already making its way through parliament. I would very much appreciate your help in getting it in to law as soon as possible so that Scotland can catch up with the rest of the UK and bring in buffer zones to protect our sisters and our daughters. Thank you very much."
