Glasgow crash heroes pull men from car seconds before it bursts into flames

A child and four adults have been rushed to hospital after the car they were travelling in burst into flames after crashing into a bus in Glasgow city centre.

Two CalMac Ferries workers, who had been on the bus at the time of the crash, raced to free two men who had become trapped in the badly damaged car seconds before it burst into flames.

The terrifying incident unfolded around 6am on Thursday morning on Cowcaddens Road.

The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that a child was taken to Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Children while four adults were taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Their conditions are currently unknown.

An eyewitness told the Daily Record how all the car's occupants were freed from the wreckage just seconds before flames began pouring from the engine of the badly-damaged car.

Three fire engines were sent to the scene while crews helped administer first aid to those injured. The city centre road remained closed while fire crews extinguished the powerful blaze.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 06.18 hrs to attend a road traffic collision on Cowcaddens Road, Glasgow. We dispatched a rapid response vehicle and four ambulances to the scene.

“Four patients were transported to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and a child was transported to the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “We were called around 6.15am on Thursday 30 June, to a report of a crash in Cowcaddens Road, Glasgow, involving a bus and a car. The road was closed between Cambridge Street and West Nile Street and re-opened around 8.05am.

“A number of people from the car have been taken to hospital for treatment. There were no other reported injuries.”
