Glasgow couple who survived coma, Apartheid and homelessness die weeks apart

A pair of Glasgow great-grandparents, who survived a near-death experience, living in South Africa during Apartheid and, at one point, having just £7 to their name, have died five weeks apart.

James Docherty Smith passed away aged 77 on May 28. His wife of 58 years, Christine Smith, died on July 7.

The lovebirds first locked eyes at primary school in the Gorbals before getting together aged 16 and married at 20. Hardship didn't ever knock the 'truly amazing' couple whose philosophy was 'just keep on going and stick together'.
