Glasgow City Mission has reported 31 placements in the past week, finding accommodation for people who would have otherwise been sleeping rough.
The Overnight Welcome Centre (OWC) opened on December 1, with individuals being helped to find accommodation since. Since the cold snap that began last week, they’ve seen a spike in people seeking shelter and successfully found a place for 31 of them.
Glasgow City Mission has said it is committed to tackling rough sleeping, and has been running the OWC since 2020 - with the service based in their Crimea Street building this year.

Until March 31 the centre will be open through the night, every night, with dinner served between 6.30pm and 8pm. The OWC team are always on hand for anyone who has found themselves in a crisis, or just needs a place to go.
Glasgow City Mission added: “Building on the experience and expertise of running a winter project for the last 12 years, it is again our aim to make sure no one needs to sleep outside the winter.
“Each year we have looked at this issue afresh and adapted to the needs of our guests and the landscape in Glasgow. We are changing our model slightly again this year.
“Anyone who finds themselves in a crisis can come, or be referred by partners, to Crimea Street, where our trained staff will operate a safe, welcoming space.
“We are also doubling our Housing Settlement Officer team so that the next morning they will follow up with guests who have accessed the service the night before, and develop a person-centred move-on plan for each individual.”
