Ricky Bell has been elected leader of Glasgow City Council, replacing Susan Aitken.

Bell has been the city treasurer and deputy leader under Aitken and now takes over with less than one year until the next council election.

The SNP, Labour, Greens and Your Party all put up candidates to be council leader.

Bell won the final vote, against Labour group leader, Rashid Hussain, by 37 votes to 29 at a meeting in the City Chambers.

He becomes only the second SNP leader at the council.

Addressing councillors before the vote, he said “I think I am the best candidate."

Bell praised Susan Aitken for her leadership over the last nine years and recognised he had a key part of that that team.

He said: “I have been in the room when big decisions have been made.”

The councillor for Govan noted the big challenges the council still faces including homelessness, budget deficits and the new pay and grading scheme.

He added: “I think I can help solve those problems.

“It’s the job of the leader to go front and centre and it's not the job to deny the problems.”

Bell said: “If I have to fight the Scottish Government for funding, I absolutely will.

“If I have to fight the UK Government, I absolutely will.”

The new leader said the rest of the city has to play their part in improving Glasgow.

He said: “We need Glaswegians to play their part. We can’t solve every problem, we need citizens to come together and help make these problems solvable.”

He said he would “champion this city from every rooftop and every corner of the world.”

After his election, he said: “I am slightly overwhelmed. I could not be more proud to be leader of this city. A wee boy from Govan brought up in Shawlands.

"I want to be Glasgow’s leader, not party politically. If that means I have to fall out with governments anywhere, I will.

He said Glaswegians are the city’s biggest asset.

Bell said : “We are gallus, funny, irreverent but by god, we are the best people in the world.”

Labour leader Rashid Hussain responded to the election of the new council leader.

He said: “Glasgow may have a different SNP leader, but Glaswegians will want to know what is actually going to change.

“Ricky Bell has been deputy council leader and city treasurer, so he has been at the heart of this administration and its decisions.

“Changing the person at the top does not clean our streets, build homes or improve local services.

“Glasgow Labour will work constructively where it is in our city’s interests, but we will continue to hold the SNP to account and offer a real alternative.

“Different leader, same SNP administration. Glasgow deserves better. It’s time to get Glasgow working again.”
