Glasgow Christmas Market organisers will not return to St Enoch or George Square this year

The long-time team behind Glasgow Christmas Markets have announced that they will not be organising them this year.

The marketplace team made the announcement on social media earlier today, saying: "We will not be organising Glasgow Christmas Market 2022.

"For information on other festivities in Glasgow this year then please contact Glasgow City Council directly."

The team previously organised the markets in both St Enoch's Square and George Square, until 2020 when the George Square Market was cancelled and hasn't returned since.

Locals reacted to the social media announcement with anger and disappointment, with one saying: "Sorry but an announcement isn’t good enough! How many time has this been cancelled? We need a reason and explanation why!

"It’s going to get to the stage that when the Glasgow Christmas market does open back up, people just won’t go! People just won’t make the plans to attend in case it gets cancelled again."

While another blamed the rising energy costs for the cancellation, saying: "It’ll be the fact it’s gonna cost a bloody fortune for heaters lights etc due to the greedy government and gas companies."

Many comments requested a reason for the cancellation, amid speculation that another company would take over organising the markets.

A number of people in the comments blamed Glasgow City Council in the comments but the council are not involved in the organisation of Christmas markets - it falls to an independent organiser to plan and has done for a number of years.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Loves Christmas said: “We are working on plans for Christmas and look forward to making announcements for this year in due course.”
