Glasgow private hire driver blames wasp for crashing into young family taking sick child to hospital

A private hire driver crashed his car after a wasp flew in front of his face.

David McCamond was convicted at Glasgow Sheriff Court of careless driving in Govan after his Seat Toledo struck the back of Brian Crossan's stationary Audi as he waited at a roundabout.

Mr Crossan, his partner Demi Buist and their sick two-year-old daughter were also inside. The 60-year-old taxi driver told the trial that he was distracted for "two to three seconds" before the crash as he was "focused" on the wasp.

McCamond, of Cardonald, initially faced a charge of causing injury by dangerous driving which was reduced mid-trial.

Sheriff Mark McGuire fined McCamond - who is now unemployed - £210 and put four penalty points on his licence.

The sheriff said: "He said that his full focus was on the wasp and his attention was completely diverted for two to three seconds from the road and what was ahead.

"His attention was where it should not have been, an insect.

"He failed to allow a distance and a collision occurred and that falls below the standard of a competent and careful driver."

Miss Buist told the court in her evidence that she and Mr Crossan were taking their daughter to hospital at the time of the smash last October.

She said: "We were just sitting to go round the roundabout at Helen Street and a car came into the back of us."

Prosecutor Jennifer Gilmour asked the witness to describe the impact of the collision.

She replied: "When the car hit us, my head went forward and smacked behind Brian's seat."

Miss Buist stated the police were immediately on the scene and took the trio to a nearby section of grass.

She claimed that the Audi's rear and taxi's front were damaged.

The witness stated that she had a brief chat with McCamond.

Des Ziolo, defending, asked if he said anything about why the incident happened.

She replied: "He said a wasp flew into his car."

McCamond told the court in his evidence that he believes the wasp was already in his car as he had the windows shut.

He said: "I swotted the wasp and it hit my window and I heard it hit my window - I didn't know there was a wasp in the car until I hit it."

He stated that it took "two to three seconds" after the wasp had entered his vision before the collision.

Mr Ziolo asked why the taxi driver did not apply his brakes.

He replied: "Because I was affected when I swotted the wasp - it hit the window and landed on me and then it happened."

McCamond later stated that if the wasp had not appeared he would have stopped the vehicle.
