Glasgow bar blasted as union claims 'victimisation' at Sauchiehall Street venue

Workers at a Glasgow bar have raised a catalogue of concerns over working practices in an angry letter to bosses.

Union members at Broadcast - which makes up 75 per cent of the workforce - have taken to social media to highlight an array of issues in a shocking collective grievance letter.

Owner Paul Cardow has now agreed to meet with representatives from trade union Unite, as images showing what they claim are filthy conditions that both staff and punters are subjected to at the Sauchiehall Street venue.

Industrial organiser at Unite union, Bryan Simpson, said: “Any decent employer who cares about the welfare of his staff would be falling over themselves to meet with his workforce to seek resolution.

"Instead, a week after receiving a plethora of serious complaints from 75 per cent of staff, the owner of broadcast Paul Cardow has ignored attempts to engage collectively, appointed lawyers and even terminating signatories.

"This is trade union victimisation, and until Mr Cardow sits down with his workforce, we shall be escalating this campaign at Broadcast industrially and legally.”

After signing the collective letter, it's claimed two workers had been removed from the bar's regular rota and told that they no longer have a job at the bar. Since then, one of them has been re-instated with immediate effect.

The music venue has also had a number of musicians and bands pull out of upcoming appearances at Broadcast, as well as messages of support for the workers on social media.

Some of the other grievances raised by the workers include:

  • A request for in-house security to be hired and on the premises from 8pm
  • Improved policies that adhere to the law in relation to health and safety, wages, holidays, contracts and breaks

  • All maintenance, repair and cleaning supply issues to be rectified and any future issues to be dealt with promptly by a professional
  • For the company to provide proper break areas to members of staff or allow staff to take breaks in view of customers
  • For the company to ensure staff are given the breaks they are entitled to
  • For the company to recognise Unite the union as the sole trade union for collective bargaining purposes.

A number of issues with regards to wages and contracts were also raised, with workers requesting that all current and former staff are paid outstanding wages, sick pay and holiday pay, that the company provides more transparency about pay, consistency with payslips and pay dates, and that a portal for staff to review all pay details is created.

Improved compliance with HMRC is also being asked of employers, as well as for all staff to be provided with legally valid employment contracts.

Mr Cardow has now agreed to meet with the union and his workers to attempt to come up with a resolution.

Broadcast were contacted for comment.
