Glasgow Airport is preparing to welcome customers back into the building following an earlier bomb scare.
The Paisley Daily Express reported earlier today how a ‘suspicious item’ had led to areas of the airport being evacuated due to “an item in a passenger’s bag in the central search area” around 6am this morning.
AGS Airports, who run the Glasgow terminal, have said that police have now been stood down and operations are returning to normal.
A spokesman said: “Police Scotland have confirmed this morning’s incident has been stood down and our staff are now in the process of welcoming passengers back into the terminal and providing any assistance where required.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our passengers for their continued patience.”
The police have said that the item, which has caused so much travel chaos, turned out to be harmless and "innocent in nature.!
A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Around 5.55 am on Monday, December 5, police were called to a report of a suspicious item within the security search hall of Glasgow Airport.
“As a precautionary measure, and in accordance with procedures, the check-in and security search hall areas were closed to the public and a cordon implemented.
“Following examination of the item by the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) it was confirmed that it posed no risk to the public and was innocent in nature.
“All areas of the airport are in the process of being re-opened.”
Travellers were ushered out into the car park and were given blankets and water while they waited outside in the cold - some for around five hours.
The Salvation Army even arrived to distribute soup and hot beverages.
Multiple flights have been cancelled and others departed without passengers, who were prevented from checking in due to the incident.
Passengers have reported that there was little communication on the ground, with some waiting all morning only to be told hours later that there would be no alternative flight for them.
Matthew Brannigan, who was due to fly out Berlin at 9.40am was still waiting in the queue around 11.45am when he found out that he’d been hanging on for nothing.
“Just been told the plane went empty but there is no alternative for today. So been here for five hours in a car park for f**k all,” he told the Paisley Daily Express.
Another passenger said: “We have been given no information from airport staff. It appears elderly and disabled are being taken into hotels and the rest given heat blankets.”
