Glasgow Airport strikes as Christmas and New Year dates included in Border Force action

As people prepare to travel overseas to visit family members for Christmas, Border Force workers across the UK are preparing to strike on key festive dates.

Border Force workers are planning to strike across seven airports, including Glasgow Airport, on key dates in December, as the union calls for the Government to return to discussions.

The Public and Commercial Services union have stated that they were taking action due to rules over pensions, pay and working conditions.

The row, specifically over pay, the threat of job cuts, and pension rules, is between the UK Government and the Border Force workers. Strikes will take place across Glasgow Airport, Cardiff Airport, Gatwick, Birmingham, Heathrow, Manchester and the Port of Newhaven.

The strike dates are as follows:

  • December 23, 2022
  • December 24, 2022 (Christmas Eve)
  • December 25, 2022 (Christmas Day)
  • December 26, 2022 (Boxing Day)
  • December 28, 2022
  • December 29, 2022
  • December 30, 2022
  • December 31, 2022 (New Years Eve)

General secretary of the union, Mark Serwotka, said 40,000 of its members were having to use food banks, while 45,000 were claiming in work benefits.

The general secretary added: "This is a crisis. We have tried for months to negotiate with the government and we have been ignored.

"We keep being told the government has an open door, but there is no point the door being open if there is nothing behind that door.

"The public sector have no option other than to take industrial action because our members currently are skipping meals, not being able to put the heating on at home because of the poverty they are living in."

The PSC have said that 86 per cent of its 100,000 members across 124 Government departments and public sector employers have voted in favour of strike action.

A number of pickets had already been announced, including driving instructors and highways officials.
