Glasgow Airport bomb squad set up cordon as passengers evacuated from check-in area

A cordon has been put in place by specialist bomb disposal teams at Glasgow Airport with passengers and staff evacuated from the check-in area.

Police Scotland have issued a new update and confirmed that the security hall areas have been closed to the public while enquiries are carried out.

Travellers and airport staff have been moved to the multi-storey car park with police and fire crews still at the scene.

The alarm was raised shortly before 6am on Monday, December 5, after a suspicious item was discovered inside a passenger’s bag, airport chiefs have confirmed.

The nature of the item is not currently known, however, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team remains in attendance.

A statement from Police Scotland said: “Around 5.55 am on Monday, 5 December 2022, police were called to a report of a suspicious item within the security search hall of Glasgow Airport.

“As a precaution and in accordance with procedures, the check-in and security hall areas were closed to the public.

“The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) is in attendance and a cordon is now in place. Staff and members of the public have been moved from the check-in area to the multi-storey car park.

“Police and emergency services remain at the scene. No further details at this time.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “We were called to assist emergency service partners at around 6am on Monday, 5 December to an incident at Glasgow Airport. “Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene and crews are currently in attendance.”

A statement from Glasgow Airport said: “At approximately 6am, Police Scotland attended the airport due to concern around an item in a passenger’s bag in the central search area.

"Access to this part of the terminal is currently restricted while checks are being carried out meaning passengers arriving at the airport for departing flights will face delays.

"We are liaising with Police Scotland and will provide an update as soon as we can.”
