Glasgow A&E doctor attacked by foul-mouthed patient who tried to bite him

A thug tried to attack a doctor who tended to him for a head injury following a seizure.

Andrew McGrory turned on Ryan Connelly in Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary on October 25, 2021.

The 41-year-old clenched his fist and raised his arm as if he was going to punch him.

He also threatened the doctor and tried to bite him on the hand.

McGrory pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting doctor Connelly and constable Andrew Redford.

He also admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

The court heard McGrory was admitted to hospital due to a “head injury.”

McGrory was abusive to medical staff and shouted abuse at them.

Dr Connelly discharged McGrory after assessing him as he needed no medical attention

He continued using inappropriate language and called a passing doctor a “c***.”

While in the doctors’ bay, McGrory was further abusive.

Prosecutor Tanjeel Maleque said: “He tried to assault Dr Connelly by clenching his fist, attempted to raise his arm as if to punch him.”

McGrory shouted: “You f****ing c***, you f***ing d***, I will f***ing do you.”

Mr Maleque added: “During the course of this, McGrory attempted to bite the hand of the doctor.

Police later attended as McGrory continued to act aggressively towards them.

He tried to head-butt PC Redford and McGrory was restrained before being taken to a police office.

Joyce Simpson, defending, told the court: “He drank alcohol suffered an epileptic seizure - a fit in the street.

“It was bystanders who saw him collapse and he was taken to hospital.

“He is greatly ashamed by his behaviour and is embarrassed by it, extremely embarrassed.”

Sentence was deferred until next month by sheriff Sean Murphy QC.

He said: "You go into prison for five minutes and come back out for 10 and back in.

"Doctors are in a busy A&E trying to help people and you were trying to assault them.

"Custody is inevitable but something has to be done and I will call for background reports."

McGrory's remand in custody was continued meantime.
