Although most folks applaud Paul Mescal for his incredible acting skills, a majority of online fans know the bloke for his love of short shorts. It’s even got to a point where Mescal has become some kind of short shorts goddaddy because of the way he consistently champions the garment. And just like most of the internet, his Gladiator II costars Fred Hechinger and Joseph Quinn have agreed that the “short shorts lobby owe a lot” to the actor.
Speaking to PEDESTRIAN.TV the duo who play the chaotically evil Roman Empire rulers Greta and Caracalla in Gladiator II have dished up their thoughts on the world’s obsession with Mescal’s love for short shorts.
“Yes, his commitment to high shorts to short shorts is brave. It’s unparalleled, and the world needs it,” Quinn spilled as Hechinger giggled to himself.
During the Gladiator II premiere, Mescal continued to lobby the short shorts as he galivanted down the tan carpet of Sydney’s ICC.
“For the records, those shorts are worn by thousands upon thousands of Irish men at home,” Mescal shared.
“I do love them and I champion men wearing shorter shorts.”
When asked if the Roman Empire duo would start their own short shorts journey, both actors shut down the idea with Hechinger stating that Mescal “lives that [life] for the rest of us”.
“If I had calves as shapely as Paul Mescal, maybe I would. But no, I keep, uh, keep it low, trousers for me,” Quinn shared before Hechinger reflected on the thighs aspect of the fashion item.
“It’s about the kind of thighs that you’re working with and, you know, you aspire to certain levels of greatness. I don’t know that I always have that,” Hechinger laughed.
“In life, you got your adult strengths and you got your adult weaknesses. If I was walking around with those ham hocks, yeah, I’d get them out, but frankly, I don’t, but Paul does, and he treats us to that,” the Stranger Things actor chimed in.
Mescal’s love for short shorts stems all the back during Earth’s COVID-era (AKA 2020) when he shot to stardom with Normal People.
In a 2022 interview with GQ, Dakota Johnson mentioned that the actor had a “pretty expensive short shorts wardrobe”.
In June of this year, the actor sent the internet into a tizzy after he debuted the iconic short shorts at a Gucci fashion show. It’s honestly one of those pop culture moments where most people knew where they were when the pics dropped.
In Gladiator II, Mescal swaps out his footy shorts for a tunic, taking on the role of the dashing Lucius who is seeking revenge on Marcus Acacius, played by fellow internet zaddy Pedro Pascal.
Let’s all take a moment to thank Ridley Scott for putting all of Hollywood’s fine shyt (especially Denzel Washington!!!!!!) in one flick.
Gladiator II lands in cinemas on November 14 2024.
