Gita Press gets Gandhi Peace Prize, Congress calls move anti-Mahatma

NEW DELHI: The Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2021 has been conferred on Gita Press, Gorakhpur. Ironically, the conferment of the prize, which is named after Mahatma Gandhi, has been opposed by the Congress on the ground that the Gita Press was opposed to all that Gandhi stood for.

In a statement on June 18, the Union culture ministry said, “The Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2021 is being conferred on Gita Press, Gorakhpur. Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual award instituted by government of India in 1995, on the occasion of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi as a tribute to the ideals espoused by Mahatma Gandhi. The award is open to all persons regardless of nationality, race, language, caste, creed or gender.”
