Along with its beautiful route throughout Italy, the Giro d’Italia is known for its drama. Unpredictable weather, chaotic finishes and brutally tough terrain make for a very difficult 21 days of racing.
This year’s Giro d’Italia has seen riders abandon, of course, through unfortunate crashes as there always are, but the field was also heavily affected by illness in the second week, with viruses and fever being reported across teams after the first rest day. That also continued into the final week, with the mountains and harsh weather not exactly kind on riders who were already suffering.
Stage 20, however, was free of abandons. The most recent victims of the Giro's capricious nature of the race were on stage 19, when Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-Easypost) crashed and had to leave as a result. Before the race, Nick Schultz (Israel-Premier Tech) decided not to start. The previous day, Christian Scaroni (Astana) dropped out before the stage, while David Dekker (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) departed the race during stage 17.
The day after the final rest day, though, remains the biggest day for departures in the final week, with four riders departing the race. Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis), Julius Van den Berg (DSM-Firmenich-PostNL) and Jenthe Biermans (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) dropped out.
Danny van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) was also among those leaving due to illness in week three, but the field of fast men had already thinned significantly and it will be a reduced sprint field that battles for honours on the final stage of the race in 2024.
In contrast, the rider who is set to claim the maglia rosa in Rome, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), looks likely to ride across the line with a full squad.
142 riders remain at the 2024 Giro after stage 20 of the 2024 race, with a considerably larger field looking set to finish the race than in 2023, as the high attrition rate last year meant only 124 riders finish in Rome.
