Girl, 12, airlifted to hospital after swimmer jumps into pool and lands on her head

A 12-year-old girl was airlifted to hospital after she jumped five metres into a Lake District mountain pool - and someone else landed on her head.

The schoolgirl had leapt into the iconic hidden Black Moss Pot pool, nestled in the Langstrath Valley, in the sweltering heat at 4pm on Sunday.

But after she leaped into the icy water another person jumped in above her - and landed on her head just as she was surfacing below.

A Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) helicopter was scrambled to the scene while a 20-strong Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was also dispatched to help.

The youngster was placed onto a stretcher before being airlifted with head and neck injuries to the Cumberland Infirmary, at Carlisle.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team wrote on Facebook : "Black Moss Pot in upper Borrowdale was understandably very busy on this beautiful hot day.

"A 12 year old child jumped into the pool, another person jumped in immediately after and landed on the child’s head.

"The child got herself out of the water with some help but with suspected serious head and neck injuries.

"In light of the potential seriousness of the incident Helimed 58 were tasked to the incident and as a precaution the Coast Guard were also tasked but were stood down once GNAAS Helimed 58 had arrived on scene.

"Keswick sent two vehicles with other team members going direct.

"The journey up the valley was made much slower and more difficult by some very inconsiderate roadside parking.

"The casualty was assessed on scene then stretchered to the helicopter and airlifted to Carlisle Hospital."

Black Moss Pot is a popular tombstone diving spot for walkers and swimmers with high five metre walls surrounding the almost hidden pool - encouraging swimmers to take a scary leap.
