Giorgos Giakoumakis needed no Celtic transfer incentives as striker falling in love with 'amazing club'

Giorgos Giakoumakis has revealed that his Parkhead move wasn't influenced by European nights and that the size of the club speaks for itself.

Celtic host Norweigan champions Bodo/Glimt in a huge Europa Conference League first leg tie on Thursday night.

His manager Ange Postegoclou has already been open about his desire for Celtic to reach the final in Tirana in May.

When asked on the influence European football had on his summer move, Giakoumakis said: “I didn’t choose Celtic because of the European games. It’s something extra.

“I chose Celtic because it’s Celtic. It’s an amazing club.

“It’s a big club with big targets every year but of course the European games are something that’s really special to us. Special to the players.

“It is something that played its part.”

Celtic go into the game hoping to continue their 17-match unbeaten streak as they attempt to earn a place in the round of 16.

Despite winning half of their group games in the Europa League, they were only able to finish third, which saw them transfer to this third tier competition.

“Of course it’s a big game for us. This kind of game, a European game, is one every player wants to play.

“I think we will have a full stadium with us and our fans will be there for us to support.

“We are waiting for this game. We are looking forward and I think we are going to enjoy.”

Giakoumakis has had a mixed start to his Parkhead career with injury and lack of goals causing some to write off the Greek striker.

Now the striker is determined to build on his goal last time out in the 4-0 rout against Raith Rovers.

He said: "It wasn’t about competition. It was about me.

"The only thing missing from me was a goal the last four or five games, so that was something that I really wanted."

The Greek striker joined Celtic for £2.5million from Dutch side VVV-Venlo, signing a 5-year-deal.

He opened up on the differences from piling his trade in the Eredivisie to life at the Scottish Premiership leaders.

“It’s a total different game from my last team because my last team was trying to remain in the league", added Giakoumakis.

“So this game that we play now is totally different. It’s a totally different plan.

"We are a team where we have the ball, we have the possession of the ball, we create the chances, we are the leaders of the game.

“It is something that I want to improve even more, to be even better.”
