Former Rangers coach Roy Makaay has revealed Giovanni van Bronckhorst handed his own Europa League Final medal to the family of late Ibrox kitman Jimmy Bell.

Van Bronckhorst has returned to Feyenoord to manage them for a second time, after he started and ended his playing career at the Dutch club.

He took charge as manager of Rangers in 2021 and guided them to a place in the final of the Europa League the following year, only to lose on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.

And his coach in Glasgow, former Bayern Munich star Makaay, has now revealed what van Bronckhorst did after the final when he received his runners-up medal.

He said: "Gio is a gentleman. That gesture at Rangers sums him up best.

"He handed his medal from the final to the wife of our late kitman Jimmy Bell after the game.

"And that's simply because his moral compass is always well-tuned. He is social, empathetic and loyal. You can always count on Gio.

"He's not going back to Feyenoord at the easiest of times.

"But if there is one man who can make Feyenoord lead the way again, it is him."
