Gio van Bronckhorst touted for new gig as Rangers boss deemed 'suitable' for Dutch FA vacancy

Gio van Bronckhorst has been linked with a top Dutch FA vacancy.

The Royal Dutch Football Association - or the KNVB - have been searching for a new director of football since the departure of Nico-Jan Hoogma. The former defender said goodbye on June 1, but his successor has not yet been appointed. It means the hunt continues, with Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst amongst the names linked with the vacancy. The media in the Netherlands have suggested the Ibrox gaffer for the role, with former Gers boss Dick Advocaat - who managed GVB during his time as a player in Govan - also considered.

The KNVB are likely to be eyeing up an array of Dutch coaches as they look to fill one of the most important coaching positions in the Netherlands. The link comes after a number of Rangers fans were calling for van Bronckhorst's departure following the Old Firm result at the weekend, but the demands have been deemed harsh by fellow fans and pundits alike.

Reviewing a number of names, Dutch journalist Arno Vermeulen said: "I don't think Dick Advocaat is the type for this, I don't see Marco van Basten in that role either. Ron Jans? He is too light in the eyes of the KNVB, I think. Guus Hiddink? Too old. Fred Rutten? Certainly not.

"I'm thinking more about René Meulensteen. For many years, Sir Alex Ferguson 's right-hand man at Manchester United and now assistant national coach at Australia. Giovanni van Bronckhorst would also be very suitable. Above average intelligent, has experience at home and abroad and has a lot of work himself. "But of course you don't get Gio now, he's good at Rangers. Maybe there is an office version of Pepijn Lijnders (assistant coach at Liverpool, ed.)."
