Gio van Bronckhorst's Rangers press conference in full as he promises 'near future' contract talks for key duo

Gio van Bronckhorst has revealed Rangers will open contract talks with Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent "in the near future".

The pair have been a key part of the side for several seasons, and helped bring the Premiership title to Ibrox last season.

Aribo has been arguably Rangers' best player this season, with fans fearing big money offers from the Premier League.

Speaking ahead of the Borussia Dortmund match, Van Bronckhorst addressed his situation and that of Ryan Kent, as well as previewing the game.

The Dutch boss opened up on his relationship with Gio Reyna, his plans if Erling Haaland is fit to play in the Europa League tie and more.

Here's everything Van Bronckhorst had to say pre-match.

You're likely to face a kid you know well in Gio Reyna, can you describe your relationship and what it means to face him?

"I played with his father, Claudio, and I'm very good friends with the whole family actually. Gio I've known from the day he was born so I have a special relationship with him as a friend but also as a player.

"He came to Holland to train with our youth academy at Feyenoord so he was in our house and we were trying to help him to be the player that he is now.

"We have always kept in contact and seen each other at least once a year. It is a special bond I have with the Reyna family and it will be special for both of us to play against each other.

"Hopefully it is a good game. The competitors that we are, we both want to win. It will be a very special moment."

How big of a step up will this be?

"We are playing against one of the top sides in Europe.

"Of course it is very nice for us to still be involved in Europe and you know that when you are involved in Europe after the winter break that you are going to play against very good opposition. We are relishing the challenge to play against a top side and we will go out and try to go to the next round.

"For us it is a challenge and very good to be involved still in Europe."

Dortmund have a poor defensive record in the Bundesliga, is that an area where you could have some success in transition?

"I think those moments are always very special and important in games, especially against good sides. You don’t get a lot of chances and those are moments that you can create some danger.

"Of course we have analysed Dortmund very well and they won at the weekend 3-0. I think they are a quality side with good players, a good coach.

"It will be a difficult game for us but a game that we want to play and relish."

How are Ryan Jack and Leon Balogun? Is Filip Helander out of the squad?

"Filip is not in our squad. We have limited spaces unfortunately to get players registered. So for me to put Helander out was a difficult decision because he is a very important player for us. But he only played his first 60 minutes after so many months so he is not in the squad.

“Leon is not available for tomorrow hopefully he will be available for next week. Ryan trained as normal the last couple of days so he is fit to come with us to Germany.”

There will only be 10,000 at the game whereas there will be 50,000 at Ibrox - does that play into your hands?

"Of course it’s different to play for 10,000 people than with a full stadium. We know the differences. We had those games for a season with both full stadiums and less of a crowd.

"But we are still facing a good team. For me it’s no different, we just have to go out and perform. It’s two games.

"We know we have a game next week at home so we want to have a good result to take back with us, as good as possible. Next week we have a second game at home with full capacity, full crowd, full backing.

"The difference is there but our aim is to get the best result possible."

Erling Haaland looks like missing out...

"No doubt everyone recognises the talent he has and the player he is. He is one of the top strikers in the world.

"For us it’s a case of also preparing for the game without him. Dortmund have been playing without him for weeks so for me it’s about preparing the players for the opposition we will face and the quality of the players.

“It looks like he is almost back to play but everyone recognises his talent. We have to prepare the game for the players we will face and it looks like he won’t be in the squad tomorrow.

"If he is, we have to prepare as well. The quality he has, there is no doubt he is a good player.”

Does Alfredo Morelos get a lot of coaching or is he given a more free role?

"You have players who will play with their intuition during moments of the game.

"I think we have to give that freedom to players. Not only to Alfredo, but also to the other strikers.

"So they are able to play with intuition, but you also want to have your offensive and defensive shape as a team and Alfredo has a big role to play in that.

"Of course at moments he has to take up the position we want him to to become dangerous and to become better shaped as a team, but there are moments when he has freedom to do whatever he feels.

"He is one of the players who can do that. Ryan is also a player who has the freedom to do whatever in the areas we want him to be."

Borussia Dortmund are favourites to win the competition, are these the games where you really learn about your players?

"Well, we are football players, we are managers and we want to play against the best opposition possible in all the competitions we compete in.

"It’s normal if you are a player to live the moments we are facing now, playing in the Europa League and playing against Borussia Dortmund.

"Those are absolutely the games you want and that’s why you work hard from when you are young – to be able to play games like this.

"Everyone is excited the ready to play this game against big opposition in a nice stadium, so we have to make sure we enjoy the game and the occasion and make sure we are well prepared to try to win this tie.

"That’s what you want in football, that’s what you want in life.

"You want to have challenges, to face challenges and to overcome the challenges."

You've spoken about Alfredo Morelos' contract situation, is it the same for Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo?

"I haven’t spoken to them about extending their contracts or new talks.

"That’s something the club will do in the near future.

"We must make sure we have the future well planned.

"Of course these are players who are very important for our team, so the talks will begin.

"The players with these qualities you want to have as long as possible at your club."
