Gino D'Acampo restaurant given one star food hygiene rating after inspection

One of Gino D'Acampo's restaurants has received a one star food hygiene rating following an inspection last month, with "major improvement necessary" for the business.

The eponymous venue, Gino D'Acampo, in Liverpool - located on Old Hall Street - is understood to have been assessed by environmental health officials earlier this year.

The restaurant - located within the hotel INNSiDE by Meliã Liverpool, which includes a sky bar - is part of a chain of venues that are named after the celebrity chef, 46.

According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the business was inspected on January 17. It states that the restaurant in has received a one star - out of five - food hygiene rating.

The rating states that "major improvement [is] necessary," though the FSA hasn't shared further details about the decision to award the business with a low rating last month.

Although the reason(s) for such hasn't been revealed, the FSA provides an overview of what inspections include on its website. Is says that three elements are typically checked.

This includes "how hygienically the food is handled," such as how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored. The "physical condition" of the business is also reviewed, including cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation, pest control and other facilities.

The third element is how the site manages ways of keeping food safe, "looking at processes, training and systems to ensure good hygiene is maintained." According to the FSA, the inspecting officer "can then assess the level of confidence in standards being maintained in the future."

A spokesperson for Gino D'Acampo Hotels and Leisure told the Liverpool Echo that they are "extremely disappointed" with the rating and have taken "immediate action" over it.

They said: "We're extremely disappointed with this rating and have taken immediate action to address the points raised. Our expert consultants have since conducted a robust audit and were satisfied that corrective measures have been met."

The spokesperson further told the outlet: "A re-inspection has already been invited and we are confident of seeing a return to higher scores in line with our sibling restaurants."
