The New York Giants (2-1) will host the Chicago bears (2-1) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey this Sunday afternoon.
That, of course, provides those of us here at Giants Wire the opportunity to hypothetically steal from the Bears’ roster in search of depth and/or talent upgrades for Big Blue.
The issue facing us this week is that Chicago’s roster is every bit as thin — if not thinner — than the Giants’ current roster. Luckily, there are a small handful of positions where the Bears have someone worth stealing.
6-foot-5 wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown is tempting given the Giants’ issues at the position, but has he really proven enough in his three-plus years to take in this scenario? We decided against it.
Linebacker Roquan Smith was another obvious option and would replace Tae Crowder in the middle, but he’s been regressing a bit over the past season and a half. It would still represent a potential upgrade but not enough of one.
Ultimately, we settled on guard Cody Whitehair.
The 30-year-old Whitehair had a dominant rookie season but regressed a bit after that. Still, he’s settled in as a consistently above-average guard with a particular knack for run blocking. And while the Giants struggle in pass protection, he would also provide an upgrade there over Ben Bredeson and rookie Joshua Ezeudu.
This theft is far from high-profile and isn’t exactly star-studded, but it would immediately improve the Giants’ offensive line and provide a little help for running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Daniel Jones.
What are your thoughts, Giants fans? Would you pick Cody Whitehair or would you steal an entirely different player from the Chicago Bears?
