Giles Coren replaced as Times Radio presenter before fried chicken 'racism' row

Giles Coren made the decision to step down from his Times Radio show before a racism row and has now been replaced.

His Friday afternoon show will now be hosted by Ruth Davidson, who'll take over from February 18 on the News UK-owned platform.

Other presenters have been stepping in since Giles stepped down before Christmas.

Presenter and Times columnist Giles was recently accused of "blatant racism" over his review of chicken shop Popeyes' new branch in Stratford, east London.

However, the Mirror understands that the appointment has nothing to do with Giles' comments and that he had actually decided to step down from the station weeks before his column was printed

He had said in his column "exploiters" of fried chicken recipes in chain restaurants had brought "obesity, sloth, waste, [and] high street degradation" to white communities.

His comments were met with backlash from some readers who felt the 52-year-old was associating black people with these negative effects, with one even saying it was "disturbing" to see his comments printed in a national newspaper.

Coren denied the association when approached for comment by MyLondon and said he was "sad and baffled" by the criticism piled onto him.

He said: "I abhor and despise racism and racists, which is why I wanted to acknowledge and criticise the complex history of fried chicken as it is represented today on our high streets."

Today, it was announced that Ruth would be taking over his Times Radio show.

Ruth worked as a journalist and broadcaster, presenting live shows for BBC Scotland, before joining Scottish Parliament in 2011.

That year, she was elected leader of the Scottish Conservatives and under her leadership, the party's seats were doubled and it replaced the Labour party as the official opposition in Scottish Parliament in the 2016 election.

Speaking of her new appointment, Ruth said: "Times Radio is only 18 months old but has already established itself as a must-listen destination for politicians and voters of every hue.

"Its mantra of conversation not confrontation is an incredibly important one in our polarised times. I’m very excited about combining my two great loves, politics and live broadcasting, for a new show which will take a deep look at the big political issues of the week, as well as anticipating what the weekend has in store."

Times Radio Programme Director, Tim Levell, said: "Ruth is well-known as one of the most liked and respected politicians of her generation. Now Times Radio listeners have a chance to hear what a great live radio broadcaster she is.

"Ruth will dive into politics, as they’d expect, but also culture, entertainment and sport - plus all the breaking news of the day. Ruth’s take on the world is a perfect fit for Times Radio."

News UK did not want to comment. The Mirror has also contacted Giles for comment.
