New York Giants sudden star Tommy DeVito is piling up wins for his local team and his fame is reaching new heights by the minute.
On Wednesday, the NFL named DeVito the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Giants’ 24-22 victory over the Green Bay Packers.
The rookie quarterback who grew up near MetLife Stadium appears to be unfazed by both his rise and the trimming that goes with it.
“It’s cool, I guess. I don’t know. I didn’t really think anything of it. It’s kind of just outside stuff,” DeVito told reporters about his latest accolade.
DeVito was then asked about all the attention he and his family have been getting the past month since he took over as the Giants’ starter.
“It’s good. I mean, I appreciate the support from everybody. Obviously, being from a small town, it’s a lot going on in such a small area. But I appreciate everybody,” he said. “I’m just trying to continue to be me. I’m going to let my personality show. That’s it.”
DeVito also described how much he has progressed since being signed as an undrafted free agent this spring to be the Giants’ third string, emergency quarterback behind Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor.
“A lot. I mean, there have been a lot of situations that I haven’t been in before. That was my first two-minute situation at the end of last game. It’s really all situational,” he said. “But taking care of the ball, that’s been a big thing. Right now, avoiding the sacks, trying to have those minimized, just keeping the team staying ahead of the chains.”
DeVito said that Jones — who is on IR and rehabbing his torn ACL — has been extremely helpful in his journey.
“When he’s around, when he’s done doing his rehab, and he’s either in here or in the quarterback room, I’m always picking his brain, just having a conversation,” DeVito said. “He’s probably always the first text on my phone right after the game ends. I usually see him in here the next morning sitting getting treatment. So, we’re always talking and he’s always the first one.”
The fans digging the whole vibe around DeVito and his family right now, but he knows the drill. That can change in a hurry if he begins to falter.
“I’ve dealt with the New York crowd before playing in Syracuse. I’ve dealt with it before, so I know how it goes,” he said. “They can love you or they can be the complete opposite quick, depending on how certain things are going. I know how it is. People are tough, but they expect the best. That’s what we’re going to try to give them.”
So far, so good.
