Giants to hire Chiefs Mike Kafka not Browns Chad O’Shea as offensive coordinator

We shared Wednesday that Cleveland Browns wide receiver coach and passing game coordinator Chad O’Shea was being considered for the offensive coordinator job with the New York Giants. His links to new Giants head coach Brian Daboll and his one season as offensive coordinator with the Miami Dolphins bode well for his chances to get the job but he was in competition with some quality candidates.

Thursday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network is reporting that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s coach Mike Kafka will be hired for the position instead:

Kafka, like soon-to-be Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, played quarterback in the NFL after being selected in the fourth round by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010. Kafka only played four career games, completing 11 of 16 passes for 107 yards and two interceptions. He bounced around the league for a few years last being on the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad in 2015.

After his playing career, Kafka spent a year helping at Northwestern University before joining the Chiefs. He has been the team’s quarterback’s coach since 2018 with his role with the Giants being his first time calling plays.

O’Shea could still be wanted by other teams as Houston and Miami have still not filled their head coaching positions and other teams still have roles they need to fill.
