The New York Giants will close out the regular season on Sunday afternoon against the Philadelphia Eagles, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a little roster tinkering left to be done.
On Monday, the Giants signed rookie linebacker Jeremiah Martin to their practice squad.
The 24-year-old Martin was signed by the Cleveland Browns after going undrafted out of Washington last April. However, he was waived as a part of final cuts and remained unsigned until general manager Joe Schoen picked him up off the street.
Martin was named First-team All-Pac-12 in 2022 after recording 41 tackles (21 solo, 11 for a loss), two forced fumbles, one pass defensed and 8.5 sacks. It was a career season for the 6-foot-3, 265-pounder, who saw little action at Texas A&M prior to his transfer.
Ironically, CBS Sports gave Martin a pro comp of current Giants linebacker Boogie Bashman ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.
Jeremiah Martin is a big, thick, fluidly athletic edge rusher. He’s lacking bend but otherwise very impressive athlete relative to his size. He’s a polished pass rusher who wins with a variety of moves. Some speed-to-power conversion, and he counters awesomely. He flashed a nice spin move. He’s a solid run defender, sets a sturdy edge and will chase from the backside. He’s not easily moved in the run game because of his mass and energy. Bend is an issue. He utilizes length to keep blockers off his frame. You rarely see him on the ground because of how well-built he is. He’s a ready-to-go three-down EDGE with a refined game as a pass-rusher.
Now the two are teammates… For at least one week.
