Time is up! The 2023 NFL draft is here and that means it’s time for pens to go down.
Final mock drafts are in and there can be no more changes. Now we wait to see who got things right, who got them wrong, and which (if any) wild predictions come true.
For NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, he envisions a rather predictable start to Round 1. But he also has a few star prospects slipping a bit, which eventually causes a shakeup. It also allows the New York Giants to stand pat and land a dynamic defensive back in Alabama’s Brian Branch.
Branch is one of the more versatile players in this class, and Wink Martindale’s defense is built on having versatile pieces.
The selection of Branch comes with TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston still on the board.
Jeremiah’s colleague, Lance Zierlein, views Branch as a Minkah Fitzpatrick-type defensive back.
Plug-and-play defensive back with every ingredient necessary to become a high-performing starter early in his career. Branch has primarily handled nickel coverage at Alabama but has the range and instincts for single-high or split safety looks. He’s quick, fast and strong with the ability to match up with shifty slots, bigger possession receivers and pass-catching tight ends. He’s urgent and has a mind for the game. He takes playmaking angles into the throwing lane but does have a tendency to play it a little safe from off-man coverage. There are areas where he can improve but no real weaknesses, which could make him one of the safest picks in the draft.
The Giants may not be in dire need of a safety but the do-it-all Branch would be difficult to pass over. His versatility would allow Wink Martindale to mix and match, constantly keeping the opposing offense on their heels. He could also help improve special teams.
