The New York Giants are 2-7 at the midway point of the regular season and their playoff hopes are all but dashed. Despite that, there will be few changes.
It will remain business as usual in East Rutherford, and that includes Daniel Jones staying under center as the team’s starting quarterback.
“He is,” head coach Brian Daboll said when asked if Jones would continue as the starter. “Nothing changes.”
While that news comes as a surprise to some, especially considering the financial implications should Jones get hurt, it shouldn’t. He played his best game of the season in Sunday’s loss to the Washington Commanders, amassing 228 total yards and three combined touchdowns.
Those numbers would have been even more impressive had referees not called back a Wan’Dale Robinson touchdown (OPI) and his receivers didn’t drop five passes (only three were officially counted).
“I thought he did a nice job. The week before I thought he did a lot of good things. Again, when you lose, it doesn’t feel like any of that. But he made a lot of good plays for us,” Daboll said. “He had the batted ball, we had Malik (Nabes) behind it. A couple other balls that were kind of right off the tips of a couple of guys here. But I think he executed the offense well and gave us an opportunity.”
Whether sticking with Jones is perceived as the correct decision or not, Daboll has been firm and honest about the team’s plans. He’s never moved off the notion that DJ will continue to start so long as he remains healthy.
However, should Jones lay an egg in Germany against the Carolina Panthers, things may then become subject to change.
