Giants Lose Top Target for Significant Time With QB Daniel Jones Set to Return

Week 9 vs. the Raiders won’t be the only game the Giants will play without Daniel Jones’s top receiver and backup, with injured tight end Darren Waller and quarterback Tyrod Taylor set for extended absences.

New York announced Saturday Waller (hamstring) and Taylor (ribs) have been placed on injured reserve ahead of Sunday’s road game versus the Raiders, keeping them sidelined for a minimum of four games. Both veterans were already ruled out for Week 9 earlier in the week and went on to miss the entire week of practice.

With Jones set to return Sunday from a neck injury, Saturday’s decision deals a tough blow to the Giants (2–6) days after the pair’s premature departures in the Giants’ 13–10 overtime loss to the Jets last Sunday.

Waller, who missed eight games in 2022 with a hamstring injury, left the game with a hamstring strain in the first quarter. He was subsequently ruled out, and later told reporters it “may take a little bit” for him to heal from his latest setback.

Despite his health troubles and the Giants’ struggles, Waller, a Raider for the last three years, has been the top weapon in the receiving corps en route to logging a team-high 36 catches for 384 yards with one touchdown.

As for Taylor, a hard tackled forced him to leave his third start in place of the injured Jones on a stretcher midway through the second quarter. The 13-year pro was hospitalized and released the next day; in his three starts, Taylor went 46-of-72 for 487 yards and two TDs.
