The New York Giants remain busy conducting virtual meetings and top-30 visits with just two weeks remaining until the 2023 NFL draft.
Most recently, they met with Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz on an official top-30, reports Tony Pauline of The Draft Network.
I continue to hear the Giants are locked onto Schmitz. Offensive line coach Bobby Johnson privately worked him out, and the team brought the center in for an official 30 visit. I’ve had the Giants selecting Schmitz with the 25th pick in the only two mock drafts I’ve done this year.
Schmitz has been a common mock to the Giants at No. 25 overall but there is a growing belief he may slip into the second round (ditto Joe Tippmann). How far they’d actually slide on Day 2 is the question and it might require the Giants actually trading up if they wanted to land either.
There is also a debate over which of the two centers — Schmitz and Tippmann — is a better fit for the Giants’ offense. The sides on that appear evenly split.
Ultimately, even after adding J.C. Hassenauer in free agency, the Giants remain in need of a center and are a near lock to draft one in Kansas City.
