Giants’ Brian Daboll: ‘It’s always been fun to coach’ Daniel Jones

After an ugly Week 1 performance against the Minnesota Vikings caused many to question his future in the NFL, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has rebounded in a big way.

Over the past four weeks, Jones has been one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the NFL and has thrown six touchdowns to just one interception, which came on a hail-mary attempt.

Although the Giants are 2-2 over that span, they very easily could have gone 4-0. Neither of the losses falls on Jones’ shoulders, although the argument could be made this his gritty effort against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 5 was a catalyst behind the upset victory.

Even if that’s deemed hyperbolic, the bottom line is that the Giants are having fun again. And head coach Brian Daboll is having a blast coaching Jones.

“It’s always been fun to coach him because he’s a true pro,” Daboll said of Jones. “Again, always want the results, but have a lot of confidence in him, how he’s playing, how he’s preparing. (We) feel comfortable putting the ball in his hands. That’s what we did early in the game. We went after them a little bit throwing the ball. So got a lot of confidence in him.”

Jones has also returned to his bruising ways on the ground. He’s gotten comfortable lowering his shoulder and taking on defenders, which was a staple of his game before suffering a torn ACL in 2023.

Although the Giants don’t want Jones hurt, they also don’t want to limit his competitive spirit.

“You got to be smart about it but he’s a true competitor. There was a play couple weeks back, him pushing on the go line in Cleveland,” Daboll added. “He’s a competitive young man, who again, Daniel Jones has done everything that I and we have asked him to do. He’s here early. He stays late. He’s got good leadership traits. It’s never been easy for him, but everything we’ve asked him to do he does it the very best he can do it. He’s played some good football here. We’re going to need him to continue to do that.”

Now the onus on Jones is to snap his ugly streak in primetime games. He’ll have that opportunity on Sunday night against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Both Daboll and Jones hope the fun continues.
