Giants among four NFL teams who need extra cap space

With the injuries mounting again, the New York Giants are likely going to need more salary cap space than they currently have to make it through the season.

In fact, they are one of four teams who almost certainly need to create additional camp space.

According to Over the Cap, the Giants have just $5.41 million in available cap space but Spotrac (top 51) has them with less a million.

The Giants officially have six players on injured reserve (IR) at a total cost of $3.4 million and another $4.1 million dedicated to their two players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, Matt Peart and Nick Gates.

They are carrying a dead money charge of $31 million, a figure that consists of the remnants of the contracts of two released veterans — Logan Ryan and James Bradberry.

Not that they will be making any big-ticket signings at this late date, but with such wiggle room and the injury epidemic in full swing again the Giants’ plans to turn things around could run aground quickly this year.

Keep an eye on defensive lineman Leonard Williams, who may be due for a contract restructure or extension to create a little financial breathing room.
