Gianni Vio staying at Tottenham as Ryan Mason finalises new coaching team

Ryan Mason led Tottenham training on Tuesday, as the club continued to finalise the make-up of his new backroom staff.

Mason was named as Spurs' latest interim head coach on Monday following the dismissal of Cristian Stellini, who was sacked after overseeing Sunday's humiliating 6-1 defeat at Newcastle.

Mason may bring in coaches from outside the club, although Perry Suckling, who was assistant first-team goalkeeping coach under Antonio Conte and Stellini, is expected to stay on, and Nigel Gibbs could step up from his role in the academy.

Gianni Vio, the set-piece coach, is the only Italian member of the Conte-Stellini staff to stay on. He joined the club last summer from the Italy national team, having never previously worked with Conte, and is considered his own man and a valuable specialist.

Stellini led a recovery session on Monday morning before being dismissed by chairman Daniel Levy after just four matches in charge. Levy described the defeat at St James' Park as "wholly unacceptable" and "devastating to see", and told supporters "ultimately the responsibility is mine".

After Stellini's dismissal, the chairman met with the player committee - comprised of captain Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Eric Dier - at Hotspur Way in a bid to restore some degree of leadership to the rudderless club.

Levy is continuing to lead the search for a new permanent coach and sporting director. Mason faces a daunting first few days in the job, with Manchester United the visitors on Thursday before a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.

The former England midfielder will be tasked with trying to secure a place in the Europa League or Europa Conference League next season, although any hopes of returning to the Champions League were all but ended on Tyneside - and Aston Villa, Liverpool and Brighton are all breathing down the necks of fifth-placed Spurs.

The 31-year-old also took charge of the final seven matches of the 2020-21 campaign after Jose Mourinho's dismissal, including the Carabao Cup Final defeat by Manchester City, and led Spurs to four wins.

A disciple of Mauricio Pochettino, Mason will likely want to get the side back on the front foot but may have been spooked by the catastrophic failure of Stellini's switch to a back four against Newcastle.
