Ghoudoussi plea, Shola message and record-breaking aim as Newcastle Women return to St James' Park

Newcastle United Women take on Bradford City Women at St James’ Park this weekend with hopes of a bumper crowd in attendance once again. This will be the third time the Lasses will have played at the stadium – the first since November – and there is optimism about attracting a crowd of 30,000.

Newcastle Women were victorious in their most recent trip to St James’ Park in a 2-1 victory in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup which saw a record-breaking attendance of 28,565. This broke their previous high of 22,134 against Alnwick Town Ladies back in May 2022.

For their third visit, Becky Langley’s side are hoping for another huge three points against the team in second-bottom to boost their promotion push. They are currently battling Durham Cestria for the title and, despite a six-point gap, have it in their own hands with four games remaining.

After narrowly missing out on the top spot last season, the Magpies will be desperate to get over the line this time and a great showing of support could play a huge role in getting them there.

“I think it would be absolutely amazing if we could get 30,000 in here for a women’s game,” Langley told NUFC TV. “We’ve had brilliant support at Kingston Park, having 4,000 against York and 2,000 against Middlesbrough. We’re super impressed with the support we’ve had and we just want to keep that going.”

Co-owners Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Amanda Staveley have been hugely supportive of the team and have repeatedly talked about wanting to get them into the Women’s Super League.

Over the weekend, Ghodoussi was encouraging supporters to come along to the match to help reach their goal of 30,000. “Let’s show our ladies what it means to support Newcastle United. We are way short of breaking the 30,000 mark. They need your support," he tweeted.

Former Newcastle striker and current loan manager Shola Ameobi also had a message for fans, admitting it would be ‘amazing’ to see a number of supporters showing they are 'united as one'.
