Ghana faces challenge to persuade Brics it deserves a seat at the table

Ghana is seeking to widen its trade and diplomatic options beyond the West by applying to join the Brics bloc of emerging economies. But a seat at the table is far from guaranteed: Ghana will have to convince all 11 existing members it is a valuable new partner.

Joining Brics would open up Ghana’s economic options, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said when he announced plans to formally apply for membership on Wednesday.
