Ghana FA give update on Christian Atsu after ex-Chelsea star 'trapped' in Turkey earthquake

The Ghanaian Football Association says Christian Atsu has been rescued from the wreckage of the Turkish earthquake which left him and Hatayspor sporting director Taner Savut trapped under rubble.

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake happened on Monday morning after Atsu had scored a winner for the Turkish Super Lig club against Kasimpasa. His club's vice-president Mustafa Özat told Turkish radio that the winger had been rescued but that Savut was still trapped.

Atsu, who has made 65 appearances for Ghana, is being treated for injuries with Hatay being very close to the epicentre of the earthquake and one of the worst affected areas. Over 4,800 people are reported to have been killed so far, with a huge emergency operation in place.

Ozat told Radyo Gol: "Christian Atsu was removed from the wreckage with injuries." He added. "Unfortunately, our sporting director Taner Savut is still under the rubble.

Atsu joined the club in September 2022 having previosuly played in England for clubs such as Chelsea, Newcastle United and Everton. In addition to this, he was selected for the Ghana squad for the 2014 World Cup and was voted African Cup of Nations player fo the tournament in 2015.

The Ghana FA tweeted on Tuesday morning: "We've received some positive news that Christian Atsu has been successfully rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building and is receiving treatment. Let's continue to pray for Christian."
