Getty Images filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware on 21 October, advancing a restructuring that will transfer ownership to affiliates of the Getty family and Koch Equity Development, the investment arm of Koch, Inc.

The filing follows the collapse of the company's planned merger with Shutterstock and growing competition from AI-generated imagery. Getty expects the restructuring to conclude by the end of 2026, with ordinary operations and contributor payments continuing during the proceedings.
