Getaway driver in murder of Canberra man Glenn Walewicz spared more time behind bars

The getaway driver in the murder of Canberra man Glenn Walewicz in June 2021 will not spend more time in jail.

Reatile Ncube, 19, was charged with being an accessory after the fact and was sentenced in the ACT Supreme Court today.

The court heard he had driven three others to Phillip, where they were allegedly hoping to obtain drugs and money.

But Justice Peter Berman told the court the group went to the wrong address.

Mr Walewicz was shot in the neck as he opened the door to the group, and died shortly afterwards.

"He was an entirely innocent victim shot by people who went to the wrong address, intending to steal money and drugs," Justice Berman said.

The court heard Ncube had driven the trio away at speed.

Police evidence showed the car was later seen driving with no headlights, above the speed limit through a red light.

Ncube said he heard someone had been shot as the group drove away, but did not know anyone had been killed for several days.

It took police almost a year to solve the case after they resorted to a close examination of CCTV images from the area on the night.

During his trial, Ncube wrote a letter to the court expressing his remorse and acknowledging a small action could have catastrophic consequences.

Justice Peter Berman accepted Ncube was sorry for his actions and that at first, he did not know what had happened.

"When he provided that assistance he did not know he was assisting someone who had committed a murder," he said.

But he said Ncube was aware someone had been shot.

Justice Berman imposed a two-year sentence on Ncube, although it was suspended from today, and he will serve a two-year good behaviour order.

Ncube is the first of several people charged over the incident to be sentenced.

An 18-year-old man has pleaded guilty to murder after he admitted to firing the fatal shot.
