Gerwyn Price pulls out of charity boxing match as darts star reveals medical advice

Doctor's orders mean Gerwyn Price will no longer be taking part in a rearranged charity boxing match that was scheduled for next month.

'The Iceman' was originally slated to square off against fellow Welshman Rhys Evans at the Valley Tavern in Blackwood, Wales, earlier in April. A "small fracture" in Price's hand meant that date was initially pushed back until May, but the Grand Slam of Darts titleholder has said the fight is now off completely.

“I didn’t do it [the injury] in boxing, despite what people think,” Price told Online Darts TV . “I’ve pulled out of boxing now. On medical advice, I’ve been advised not to do it. Probably that was in the back of my mind, when I was training for boxing as well as doing darts. I thought I could do it, I thought I could mix both, and that probably hindered my [darts] game a little bit. Boxing’s behind me now, it’s darts from now on in.”

Price, 37, has a varied sporting background after originally making a run at a professional rugby career prior to his darts breakthrough. After playing as a hooker for Neath and Cross Keys in the Welsh Premier Division, he was also briefly on the books of Scottish outfit Glasgow Warriors as medical cover.

On top of his latest injury woes, Price confirmed he won't be participating in the upcoming European fixture list. Having won the International Darts Open event in Riesa, Germany, back in February, he will miss at least the next leg in Premstatten, which gets underway on Friday.

"Real busy schedule lately so I've decided to take some well earned rest, will be missing the Euro Tour and won't be in Austria this weekend," he wrote via Instagram story. "Looking forward to Dublin tomorrow night. I remember the last Premier League in Ireland."

Do you think Gerwyn Price will retain his Grand Slam of Darts title in 2022? Let us know in the comments section.

After winning that first instalment of the European Tour, Price withdrew from each of the two other dates in Germany. He'll open against Joe 'The Rockstar' Cullen in the opening round of Thursday's Premier League Darts showdown in Dublin.

The Iceman currently sits sixth in the standings and is one of four players tied on one victory apiece, while table-toppers Michael van Gerwen and Jonny Clayton have each won three. Price is making his fourth appearance in the Premier League but has never finished higher than fifth.

The Welshman was ringside for Tyson Fury 's sixth-round stoppage win over Dillian Whyte on Saturday, which could be the last time fans see 'The Gypsy King' in a boxing ring. That may be as close as Price gets to a competitive match of his own, however, with next month's charity bout now off the cards.
