Gabby Agbonlahor claims Matt Targett will not be missed at Aston Villa and his move to Newcastle United “suits all parties”. The 26-year-old solved the Magpies’ left-back crisis when he arrived on loan in January, playing all but once - the 1-0 victory against his parent club - as Premier League survival was secured.
A five-month stint was made permanent a fortnight ago, with Newcastle stumping up £12million for the former Villa man. Targett made his desire for a move clear to Steven Gerrard following the arrival of Lucas Digne from Everton.
The Villans stumped up £25million to sign the Frenchman, forcing Targett to pursue a loan move. Former striker Agbonlahor thinks Steven Gerrard did not rate the now Newcastle defender.

“I think when you bring in someone like Lucas Digne you don’t need someone like Targett,” he told Football Insider. “You don’t need two top left-backs. I rate Targett, I think he’s a good player - but I think this one suited both parties.
“Sometimes managers come in and don’t rate certain players, and maybe Steven Gerrard thought he could do better than Matt Targett so he brought in another left-back. I think going to Newcastle really suited him. It was a breath of fresh air for him and the manager likes him as well. It suits all parties. He’ll be wanting to play football and he’s got a chance to do that, so he’ll be buzzing.”
