Germany player ratings vs England: Hegering colossal as Magull proves elite-level class in Euro 2022 final

Germany suffered heartbreak in the final of Euro 2022 as they were beaten by England at Wembley.

Substitute Ella Toone gave the Lionesses the lead in the second-half and they looked on course to win it in normal time at Wembley.

But Lina Magull struck in the 79th minute for Germany to level the final and said the game into extra-time.

Penalties looked looming from there, but substitute Chloe Kelly made herself the hero by prodding home from a corner in the 110th minute to send Wembley wild.

Simon Collings was at Wembley to see Germany in action...

Merle Frohms 7

Made a couple of smart saves in the first-half but didn’t really have masses to do. Tried to narrow the angle for Toone, but the finish was too good. Dealt well with crosses.

Giulia Gwinn 7

Dealt with most of England’s wing play and held her own for a lot of the game. Almost grabbed an assist when she flashed a ball across the box late on, but no one could get on the end of it.

Kathrin Hendrich 8

Not quite as impressive as her centre-back partner, but she still had a good game. Act as a nice foil to Hegering by trying to play out from the backk.

Marina Hegering 9

Probably Germany’s best player on the day and looked so commanding at the back. Dealt so well with much of England’s attacks before Toone struck.

Felicitas Rauch 7

A good performance from the left-back who had her work cut out as Beth Mead and Lauren Hemp swapped wings at times. Didn’t really put a foot wrong.

Lina Magull 8

Bright and lively, showing off her skill with a couple of neat turns around the edge of the England box. Hit the woodwork with an effort before scoring late on with a good finish.

Lena Oberdorf 7

Only 20 but looks like a real talent. Broke up play whenever she could and gave Germany a physical edge. Struggled with Walsh’s passing at times.

Sara Dabritz 6

Went close to scoring early on when her shot from inside the box was blocked by Lucy Bronze’s head.

Svenja Huth 7

Captain for the afternoon in the absence of Alexandra Popp and had a solid enough game. Full of running and pressed well.

Lea Schuller 6

Tasked with the unenviable job of leading the line in the absence of Popp. Did an okay job, but lacked the physical presence that Popp brings.

Jule Brand  6

The odd mazy run and dart forward, but the youngster didn’t really get into the game as much as she’d have wanted. Hooked at half-time.

Substitutions

Tabea Waßmuth (Brand 45’) 7

Off the bench at half-time and made a difference. Setup Magull for her goal with a good cross from out right.

Nicole Anyomi (Schuller 67’) 6

On out wide and offered a threat in behind, but lacked a bit of end product to her play.

Sydney Lohmann (Dabritz 73’) 7

A good performance off the bench. Played an important role in Germany’s equaliser.

Linda Dallmann (Magull 90’) 6

On for the excellent Magull and tried to make an impact, but couldn’t match what she did.

SaraDoorsoun (Hegering 103’) N/A

Lena Lattwein (Rauch 113’) N/A
