German Police Shoot Man Threatening Officers In Hamburg

Police officers detain a man, on Potsdamer Platz during a pro-Palestinian protest, in Berlin

German police in Hamburg shot a man on Sunday after he threatened officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device in the city's St. Pauli district. The suspect, who was shot in the leg, is currently receiving medical treatment.

The incident occurred just 700 meters away from a Euro 2024 fan zone, but authorities clarified that it was not related to the upcoming match between Poland and the Netherlands. Earlier in the day, supporters of the Dutch team had participated in a fan walk near the area where the confrontation took place.

Police emphasized that the incident is not believed to be connected to terrorism, providing some reassurance as Germany hosts the Euro 2024 soccer tournament, attracting hundreds of thousands of foreign fans.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser had previously highlighted concerns about potential Islamist-inspired attacks and hooligan-related violence during the tournament. While authorities remain vigilant and have the Islamist scene under close observation, no specific threats had been identified at the time of the incident.
