The German interior minister has criticized the celebrations of Turkish defender Merih Demiral following Turkey’s victory against Austria at the European Championship. Demiral scored twice in Turkey’s 2-1 win and celebrated by making a gesture known as the “wolf salute,” associated with the Turkish right-wing extremist group “Grey Wolves.”
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser expressed that such symbols have no place in stadiums and emphasized that the group is under surveillance in Germany. She called out the use of the European Football Championship as a platform for racism, urging UEFA to investigate and consider sanctions.
Demiral defended his gesture, stating it was a celebration of his Turkish identity and pride. UEFA has initiated an investigation into his actions, citing alleged inappropriate behavior.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry criticized UEFA's investigation, labeling it as xenophobic and politically motivated. Turkey summoned Germany’s ambassador in response to the condemnation by the German Interior Minister.
Turkey is set to face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 in Berlin on Saturday.
