German media ridicule Germany flops and slam "embarrassing" World Cup exit

The German media have stuck the boot in on the national team after Hansi Flick's side were sent crashing out of the World Cup by Japan on Thursday night.

Germany headed into their crunch match with Costa Rica needing Spain to do them a favour against Japan, who stunned the four-time world champions during the opening round of matches in Group E.

But just as they did against Germany, Japan fought back to secure a stunning 2-1 win over Spain - a result that meant that the German's 4-2 triumph over Costa Rica was not enough to book a spot in the knockout stages of the tournament.

Germany's shortcoming in Qatar caps a rotten run; they were dumped out of Euro 2020 by England in the Round of 16 last year and failed to make it past the group stage back in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Given that Germany have been almost synonymous with success on the international stage, their recent shortcomings have come as somewhat of a surprise - and they have not gone down too well with the German press.

Renowned German publication BILD delivered a scathing assessment of the national team's performance, with their back page headlined: "How embarrassing! We're out!"

Things didn't get much better inside. The coverage continued: "For the second time in a row, Germany missed the knockout round of a World Cup. The bitter record: an embarrassing defeat against Japan, a strong draw against Spain and a resounding victory against Costa Rica. It is a disgrace!"

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung also got in on the action, blasting: "German football is at rock bottom again, four years after a historic first-round exit."

Germany were one of the pre-tournament favourites and were heavily fancied to banish the demons of the 2018 tournament. But they were left to rue their own shortcomings after the match.

Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmick admitted that the defeat was the "worst day" of his career. And Flick cut a frustrated figure after the match as he issued his own damning assessment of Germany's shortcomings.

"I'm not speechless," the Germany boss insisted. "I was already disappointed and angry with the team in the first half. We brought the opponent into the game through mistakes and carelessness. Nevertheless, we won the game.

"Our downfall didn't happen today, but in 20 minutes against Japan. We could have won against Spain with a bit more efficiency. Nevertheless, the disappointment is huge.

"I don't think the team weren't fired up. We missed a lot of chances in the first half and tried to do better in the second half. Yet, we have made a big contribution to the fact that we're now going home. My disappointment is huge, and my coaching staff feel the same way."
