German city makes official move for Scottish twin after being charmed by Tartan Army

A GERMAN city has made the first official move to twin with a city in Scotland after being impressed by the Tartan Army during the Euros campaign.

Cologne, where Scotland played their second match of the Euros against Switzerland, has seen a motion put to council looking to twin with either Glasgow, Edinburgh or Aberdeen.

Oliver Seeck, Cologne council’s depute leader, said the city would be happy to twin with “the whole of Scotland” if it could, the Scottish Sun reported.

Seeck said: "There is the shared love of football between the Scots and the people of Cologne, which unites both fan groups in a unique way and which was impressively demonstrated this summer.

"And the bagpipes are now used in Cologne music by many bands and carnival societies.”

He added: “We have put forward three Scottish cities as suggestions, but we would be more than happy to twin our city with the whole of Scotland."

VisitCologne tourism chief Dr Jurgen Amann previously praised Scottish fans for having “won the hearts of the people of Cologne”.

He added: "We'll remember the Tartan Army for a long time to come: no Scotland, no party!"

In June, Cologne mayor Henriette Reker praised Scottish fans and said they were “always welcome to come back” to the city.

Also in June, a poll run by German media outlet RTL found Scots officially voted as the best supporters at the Euro 2024 competition.

The team fared less well, failing to progress beyond the group stages after recording two losses and a draw.
