Gerard Piqué has finally spoken out about the end of his 11-year relationship with Shakira.
The former football star has said he’s kept silent about the details of their break up for the sake of their two sons, 10-year-old Milan and Sasha, eight.
In an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais he said: “Everyone has their responsibility to try to do what is best for their children.
“It is about protecting them. That is the job of all parents with children. That is what I am focused on and that is my job as a father.”
Last month, Shakira also addressed the split with En Punto con Enrique Acevedo.
"I was in love with love. One way or another, I’ve managed to learn it from another perspective and feel that I’ll be fine on my own.”
She continued: “When a woman has to face [hardships] in life, she comes out stronger. When you come out stronger it means you’re learning to recognize your weaknesses and accept your vulnerability.”
Like Piqué, she said she has been primarily focused on her children since the split.
“I feel complete because I feel like I can depend on myself and I have two kids who depend on me,” she said. “I have to be stronger than a lion.”
Her chat came just weeks after Piqué went "Instagram official" with his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti.
In Pique’s El Pais interview he also said he was “very happy” with his personal life and has no regrets about the past.
“The day I die, I will look back and hope I have always done what I wanted,” he said. "I spend my energy on being with my loved ones and giving them what I have. I’m very happy....”
There has been a lot of speculation that Pique was unfaithful to Shakira, which led to their June 2022 split.
It was recently reported that when he was asked if he’d heard Shakira’s diss track exposing their break-up on the Spanish radio show RAC1.
The former footballer had responded, “yes, obviously”, adding: “I don’t want to talk about it.”
