Gerard Pique delivered fresh Barcelona setback days after announcing Shakira break-up

Gerard Pique has reportedly been told that he can leave Barcelona in what is a fresh blow to the Spanish international.

The former Manchester United defender has endured a miserable year thus far having split from singer partner Shakira. A statement from the pair earlier this month confirmed their separation. It read: “We regret to confirm that we are parting ways. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding."

Whilst his personal life has gone awry, his future on the pitch now also looks uncertain. According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona boss Xavi held a meeting with the centre-back and told him that he was not needed for next season.

There is apparently no doubt over Pique’s ability but there is reported to be concerns over his fitness and unprofessional conduct - with numerous other interests off of the pitch appearing to distract him. Meanwhile, it is suggested that the Catalan giants could swoop for a replacement for Pique - Sevilla star Jules Kounde has been linked with a summer switch to the Camp Nou.

Despite Xavi having made his decision over the defender's position in his squad, it appears that an exit from Barcelona will not be easy to achieve. It is detailed that the Catalan giants still owe the 35-year-old €40m (£35m) - a fee that the defender himself will be keen to receive.

Meanwhile, his contract still has two years left to run so there is a considerable chance that he will remain with Barca for the near future at the very least. Any exit would bring to an end the Spaniard’s 14-year spell with the La Liga club since returning to La Liga from Man United.

He has made 602 appearances for the club in all competitions since, winning eight league titles, four Champions Leagues, six Copas del Rey and a host of other trophies. The defender also went on to become an icon for the Spanish national team in that time too having earned 103 caps and winning the World Cup in 2010.

Despite an injury-hit campaign last time, Pique still managed to make 39 appearances for the club, scoring three goals.

Interestingly enough, the defender hinted last year that he would be forced to hang up his boots if he cannot play for Barcelona any longer. He said: “This could be the last season, yes. I go year after year, so I cannot guarantee that I will be there next season. The day I feel that I can’t help Barca anymore, I will retire.”

It of course remains to be seen whether he will either stay at or leave Barcelona but regardless, Xavi will hope to help the club to a better season next term. The Catalans eventually finished 13 points behind fierce rivals Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga crown, whilst they also dropped into the Europa League after failing to progress from their Champions League group.
